For nine months, from 1864 to 1865, the Union Army of the Potomac lay siege to General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the trenches surrounding Petersburg, Virginia.
Near the end of this presentation, you'll see the site of the notorious "Battle of the Crater," where an attempt was made to explosively breach the Confederate lines.

The trainers provide a favorite toy (each cat has their own favorite), that they draw across a long grass strip at high speed. The cheetah chases it--not really as prey, but for fun.

In 1864, Generals Grant and Meade led the Union Army of the Potomac into battle against Robert E. Lee at Cold Harbor, Virginia.
On June 3, Grant ordered on assault all across the line against Lee's entrenched troops. The result: anywhere from 3500 to 7000 casualties within roughly twenty minutes.
